Rising From Disaster

I recently was able to return to the coast of Gulfport, Mississippi. In 2005 the coast of Gulfport was wiped out by hurricane Katrina. Unlike New Orleans, which was devastated by flooding due to a man made disaster of the levees, Gulfport was devastated by the actual hurricane.

During the hurricane I had to divide my time between my responsibilities in New Orleans and my family in Gulfport. The day the hurricane hit I was actually with my family not far from the beach. I think that there has been enough stories about surviving the storm and its aftermath, and I have no intention of repeating myself. I just wanted to share these pictures of the beach at Gulfport that I took a few weeks ago.

I’m amazed by the rebirth that has occurred there. It is quite a big contrast from the meek rebirth we have experienced here in New Orleans. There are many reasons for this, and I am no politician to explain these reasons. All I know is that people are still suffering. I’m just glad to see the beach no longer covered in peoples’ belongings and the dead.
